Tiñoso Cape. Castillitos Battery

 Tiñoso is the cape inside the Sierra de la Muela, Tiñoso Cape and Roldán Protected Wildlife Reserve. In this area you can take a walk on “Castillitos”, enjoying a picnic with the family at the the old military batteries, where teh views of the Mediterranean Sea are wonderful. To the South, you can see from La Azohía to the cape of Águilas (Cabo Cope) and everything in between, including the Bay of Mazarrón; To the North, a number of coves, El Portús and the Bay of Cartagena.

 

To get to this area, take the RM-E22 connecting Cartagena to La Azohía, and then the road to Campillo de Adentro (RM-23), near La Azohía. After going through Campillo de Adentro, there is a narrow road going up to Tiñoso Cape, where you need to drive with caution as there are usually cyclists. Some 6 kilometers later, take the road to the left and go straight until you get to an area full of antennas. In this point, the views of the Bay of Mazarrón and Cope Cape are great...the silhouette of “Castillitos” is made out in the distance.

 

Right before getting to the fortress, there is a little parking area. Park and keep going on foot to get to the fortress or go trekking.

 

The charming building will delight children, both for its shape of “Castillitos” (little castles) as well as for the two impressive 1929 cannons by Vickers, the British military equipment manufacturer. These cannons, capable of shooting projectiles as far as 35 kilometers, were installed in parallel to the ones at Monte de las Cenizas, to protect Cartagena.

 

You can also see the Tiñoso Cape lighthouse, which cannot be accessed. This place is also great for trekking routes, some of go to the coves in this protected environment or connect to the GR-92.
