From the top of cerro de La Fuente de Archivel, overlooking the high basins of the Argos and Quípar rivers, we can imagine the last moments of the Roman Republic by looking at the stone foundation ruins of an old Roman castle later used as a Muslim fortress in the 9th century. On La cabezuela de Barranda, there was a hillock used many centuries ago as a checkpoint for people and goods between Northern Andalusia and the Eastern Mediterranean coast.
