Our Lady of Fuensanta Sanctuary is located in the
El Valle y Carrascoy Wildlife Reserve, is in the district of Algezares. The temple, built in 1694 on the remains of an old medieval chapel, houses the image of Our Lady of Fuensanta, patron saint of Murcia known since the 15
th century.
Twice a year, a statue of Our Lady is taken out to the streets during the
festivities of Murcia; the most important day is the second Tuesday after the festivities have started.
This Baroque sanctuary has a large central ward with side chapels and a dome. The facade has two towers on both sides and a central stone doorway with two angels holding a coat of arms.
The stunning decoration inside includes an altarpiece by
Nicolás Prados and
Antonio Carrión which replaced the old one destroyed in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The mural paintings by
Pedro Flores decorate the dome and choir, with ten reliefs by
Juan González Moreno. The image of Our Lady dominates the altar; although the original image creator is anonymous, it is known that Roque López restored it in 1808. The sculpture of a baby held in arms is believed to be a piece of master
Francisco Salzillo.
