
The
September Fair of Murcia is held the first fortnight of the month, although the initial and final dates may change. In any case, the event starts with the arrival of
Our Lady of Fuensanta to the city from the
Fuensanta Sanctuary in September 8, day number 251 in the Gregorian calendar. The fair ends thirteen days later, a Tuesday marked as a holiday in the municipality of Murcia, when a big crowd marches in a
pilgrimage in which Our Lady is returned to her Sanctuary.
This tradition is rooted in medieval fairs, in which goods were exchanged. The livestock fair and handcrafts stands are kept alive in the modern version of the fair, which was authorized by king Alfonso X "the Wise" in the 13th century and has currently established itself as the Patron Saint festivities of Murcia.
