September Festivities in Murcia
The Moors and Christians Festivities has been held in Murcia ever since 1983, being one of the most genuine, traditional and popular events in Spain.
This tradition goes back to the year 1452, when apparently the Christian troops of Murcia defeated the Muslim army of Granada on San Patricio (Saint Patrick) day, which is why he is the Patron Saint of Murcia and its kingdom.
During these days, the city streets are full of colors and battles recreating this period of the Reconquest. Although there are a few days of celebrations, the main events take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday prior to the Pilgrimage Festival.
Ever since, year after year this festivity has become increasingly popular. In fact, it is nowadays one of the main events in the September Festivities of Murcia, with many acts and parades held throughout the week. The Moors and Christians camp is based at the Malecón gardens.
