Regional Park of the Salt Flats and Sand Areas of San Pedro del Pinatar

On the North side of Mar Menor, along San Pedro and San Javier, sits this wetland and sand area protected since 1985. South of the park we find Encañizadas, area where Mar Menor meets the Mediterranean sea. In 1994 the park was included in the list of Wetlands of International Importance and since 1998 it is a Special Bird Protected Area. With the aim of supporting park protection and preservation, the "Las Salinas" Wetland Research and Conservation Center was inaugurated at the entrance of the natural park in 2002.

 

The park geomorphology includes coastal dunes and sand areas in which the vegetation varies significantly from large underwater posidonia prairies to salty plants in the wetter areas: anacampseros, rockets and milk thistles, not to mention the esparraguera, which is only found in Mar Menor. 

 

In addition to mammals like shrews and bats, reptiles such as skinks and insects like the beetles, the Salt Flats Regional Park has many bird species: flamingos, gulls, mallards, cormorants, herons, terns and pochards, among many others.   

 

And let's not forget something everyone loves about the Regional Park of Las Salinas: an 8-kilometer stretch of beach. In La Mota beach you can enjoy the famous mud baths which are said to soothe chronic pains and skin diseases such as psoriasis.
