Some 6 kilometers Southwest of the
port of Cartagena and just one kilometer from the coast, sits Isla de las Palomas, a small cone-shaped island with a surface of about 1 hectare.
The island, inhabitable and inhospitable, is a breeding site for seabirds, which is why it was categorized as Protection Area for Local Wildlife.
In 2008 archaeological studies determined the presence of shipwrecks around the island.
