Port of Cartagena Ever since the foundation of Cartagena, the port has been an essential part of this coastal city and its history. Back in the Roman period, it was already one of the main important ports in the Mediterranean Sea. All the civilizations inhabiting Cartagena have made considerable use of it.
 
In addition to its historical relevance as commercial port, Cartagena has also been very important as a Navy port. In fact, the city has an artillery is still in use today. The city is considered Captaincy of the coastal province of Cartagena and submarine base for the Spanish Armada.
 
It is currently one of the main commercial and industrial ports in Spain, with special relevance of the Escombreras Harbor. In recent years, the Cartagena Harbor has become one of the main destinations for cruisers, receiving one of the Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards in 2008. This award acknowledged Cartagena as one of the main international destinations for cruise ships in 2008, second to Malta.
