The week after Holy Week in Easter, Murcia celebrates its
Fiestas de Primavera, in which the city is taken over by
barracas, parades, parties and fun! Festivities start on Easter Monday and end late on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the city streets are the stage for
El Bando de la Huerta, countryside celebration in which locals and tourists wear typical farming costumes. There is also a parade in which local orchard and pork products are given to people.
On Thursday, the
Murcia en Primavera, parade, previously called
La Batalla de las Flores (Battle of Flowers), goes out with flower-decorated floats that represent the magnificence and folklore of Murcia in spring.
From Thursday to Saturday night, Murcia is taken over by the famous
sardineros and their daily parades, which end on Saturday night with the mega-parade of
Entierro de la Sardina, which ends with the burning of a large sardine to represent that spring festivities are over ... until the following year!
Barracas
A barraca is the name given to the house people used to have in the Murcian orchards. Nowadays, during spring festivities 45 modern barracas are installed throughout the city so that locals and visitors can enjoy the very best of Murcia's cuisine, including rice dishes, paparajotes, café de olla (old-fashioned coffee), cold meats, choritzo, blood sausages, white and red sausages, loin, bacon, beans, garlic potatoes, zarangollo, etc.
The barracas are owned by traditional associations that also take part in the bando de la huerta parade.
