May Rag Dolls Festival

The tradition of Los Mayos originated in the early 20^th century, although it cannot be documented as there is only oral and family evidence of it. Senior people and popular folklore say this popular tradition originated in the 60s and 70s.

In any case, on April 5, 1982, the festivity was officially registered; every May 1 the popular tradition of "Los Mayos" visits the streets of our city. The festivity has evolved throughout the years. Now, the first week of the "month of flowers" marks the start of this festivity celebrating the arrival of spring, the fertility of the fields and the cross and flower ornaments of May.

Activities

La Plantada: On May 1, at daybreak, people put rag dolls on the door of their houses, squares, gardens, etc., removing them at night time. The rag dolls are the so-called "Mayos", made of textile or paper and staffed with hay, leaves, wool, cloth, etc., and turning the streets of Alhama into a real ethnology museum. "Los Mayos" are used to imitate or make fun of a situation, and the characters communicate with dialogs written in verse.

Los Corremayos: Group of people of all ages wearing colorful Joker clothes that visit "Los Mayos", one by one. There is usually a table offering a glass of wine and an assortment of nuts.

Cruces de Mayo: This beautiful religious celebration, full of symbolism and rituals has stood the test of time. This year it is held on May 3. The highlight of the celebration are the collages with a base made of a flower cross surrounded by various cult objects and ornaments.

Other activities

Encuentro de cuadrilla: On Sunday, day of Los Mayos, there is an interesting music event where local bands play traditional songs in the streets, squares and corners where Mayos are located.

National Folklore Festival: The last Sunday of April a folklore event is held; the main characteristic of this festival is that one of our local music group invites other regional or national bands.

Concert in Alhama: This yearly event is held the days before Día de los Mayos, with some of the main national bands performing in the town of Alhama.
