Holy Week in Murcia is a Festivity of International Tourist Interest. This is one of the most important religious celebrations in Spain because of its history, style and cultural heritage. Beautiful images by
Francisco Salzillo,
Roque López,
Bussy and
Antonio Dupar, among others, are taken out on the streets in folkloric processions.
A total of 15 fraternities and 93 processional floats are part of Easter in Murcia, from Good Friday to Easter Sunday; the main fraternities are Los Coloraos in Easter Wednesday and Los Salzillos in Good Friday. Both of them are really old (from 1411 and 1700 respectively), bring thousands of penitents and have more artistic value than any other, exhibiting pieces by Salzillo, de Bussy and Roque López.
The unique style of Murcia's Holy Week is seen in the clothes people wear, in a combination of traditional pieces and local garments, like esparto-grass shoes. Other typical traditions in Murcia include giving away sweets, mona buns with egg, and have special penitents with their faces exposed who lead the rest of penitents in their walk.
