Holy Week in Cartagena

Good Friday is the starting point for Holy Week in Cartagena; for nine days, until Easter Sunday, there are parades by the city's four fraternities: Marrajos, Californios, Resucitado and Socorro. The first two are the oldest and most important, dating from the 16^th century, whereas as the first parade documented goes back to 1663.

 

Declared a Festivity of International Tourist Interest, Holy Week in Cartagena has great artistic value, with pieces by Francisco Salzillo, Mariano Benlliure and José Capuz , as well as lovely banners and cloaks from the 18^th and 19^th century.

 

Cartagena is home to the first Holy Week parade, known for its solid drum sounds, light, flowers and music.
