Good Friday is the starting point for Holy Week in Cartagena; for nine days, until Easter Sunday, there are parades by the city's four fraternities:
Marrajos,
Californios,
Resucitado and
Socorro. The first two are the oldest and most important, dating from the 16
th century, whereas as the first parade documented goes back to 1663.
Declared a Festivity of International Tourist Interest, Holy Week in Cartagena has great artistic value, with pieces by
Francisco Salzillo,
Mariano Benlliure and
José Capuz , as well as lovely banners and cloaks from the 18
th and 19
th century.
Cartagena is home to the first Holy Week parade, known for its solid drum sounds, light, flowers and music.
