Just like
Santo Domingo church, this old Muslim mosque was turned into a church by king
Alfonso X after the reconquering of Spain. The temple was originally devoted to St. Michael the Archangel before being moved to the
new church near the town hall in the 17
th century, when the devotion focused on
San Roque before Our Lady of Carmen become the patron saint in 1606.
The facade is simple, with a niche protecting the image of the Lady. The Latin cross ward and interior were fully renovated in the first half of the 18th century, giving it a Baroque touch with a dome supported by pendentives and two small chapels where the choir is located. The belfry remains intact since the 15th century.
The chapel houses the Easter floats of Mula created by
Sánchez Lozano, who followed the same pattern of the original ones. The first float was made by
Francisco Salzillo for this church.
