In the 1970s,
Tomás Maestre had the idea of creating a little residential Venice in the North part of
La Manga by making artificial canals in an area of old salt flats. These waterway canals, suitable for small boats, are connected to
Mar Menor and
Encañizadas area.
Although the idea of
Tomás Maestre was never fully carried out, there are some ruffs and a Venice-like bridge known as
Puente de la Risa (bridge of laughter).
