Spanish name: Iglesia Parroquial de San José. Águilas
This neo-classical religious temple is located in
Plaza de España, right in the city center of
Águilas.
After a few years used as an esparto grass warehouse, the church was reconditioned as a place of religious worship in 1790 under the name "Purísima Concepción y Señor San Indalecio". Nine years later, in 1799, the temple received its current name: Parroquia de San José.
The city's patron saint, Virgen de los Dolores (Our Lady of Sorrows), is worshiped in this temple. The Virgin image is the work of sculptor Roque López, student of the prestigious Francisco Salzillo.
