The temple was erected between 1685 and 1707 by Franciscan friars in collaboration with the locals of Cieza after violent confrontations taking place between different families for over 14 years.
This single-ward, three-story building has side chapels and semicircular arch. The decoration is sober and austere, with simple, typical Baroque ornamental pieces, such as garlands and plants.
After being used as a home for the elder, army hospital during the Civil War and adult education center, among other things, the building was restored and transformed into the new Municipal Library, in honor of Father Salmerón.
