This sandstone replica sculpture is located on a large pedestal or base in the
Malecón access area, near the Segura River. The structure was dismantled in the 1995-1997 prior to undertaking urban redesign works in the area of
Plano de San Francisco,
Malecón and the windmills in the Segura river course. The
Manterola bridge was also built during that period.
The Malecón lion is one of the few monumental plastic art pieces associated to urban development in Murcia in the 18th century. This popular historical piece, an emblem of Malecón, is considered to mark the boundary between the urban area of Murcia and the countryside.
The original 18th-century lion is kept at the City Museum.
