Aledo

Aledo Nearly 1000 people live in this small village located in the southern slope of Sierra Espuña, at an elevation of over 800 meters.  A walk through this town quickly reveals, out in the distance, the village's main treasure: Torre del Homenaje, a fortified Muslim palace including one of the largest defense towers in the Region of Murcia.

Following the prominent role of this village in the Middle Ages as a stronghold in the very heart of the Guadalentín valley corridor, the people of Aledo decided to settle in the plains. Ever since, little has changed in the urban development of Aledo, which keeps its medieval atmosphere and warrior spirit.

Some of the ancient traditions of the Aledo people include pottery and esparto products, which are shaped into hand-made carpets, straw envelopes for bottles, etc. When in Aledo, don't forget to ask for Jallullo, a typical meal made with bacon, sausage, peppers, onion, garlic, salt and flour...delicious!  And right after lunch, a little drink of Mantellina, made of honey, lemon, aniseed liqueur and water.
