The ´Orden Mercedaria´ (Order of Mercy) dates back to medieval times. The Order settled in Lorca towards the end of the 13th century when the troops of James I arrived to quash the Mudéjar uprising. Its principal mission was to free the Christians held captive by the Muslims.
The first convent was high up in the Castle, but it was later moved to the riverside, on the main access road to the town. The building has been renovated, preserving the facade of the old church with the coats of arms belonging to the Orden Mercedaria, the Town council of Lorca and the García de Alcaraz family. Today it houses the Lorca Taller del Tiempo Visitor Centre that first welcomes us to the town.
