Olivera Gorda, wild olive tree grafted in an
almena olive branches (European olea), is considered the oldest historical tree in the Region of Murcia, with an age of 1400 years and a height of 8 meters. In January 2008, it received the "Tree and Forest Award of the Year" in the Historical Tree category, awarded by the
Bosques sin Fronteras NGO.
As oral tradition has it, the Ibn Hud uprising against the Almohads took place under its branches in 1228 with the idea of founding a Spanish-Islamic state. They partially achieved their goal because for 10 years they were independent from pretty much the rest of Muslim Spain. Another legend says that after the Mudejar uprising of 1265-1266, the Mudejars of the valley surrendered their weapons to the Army on King Jaime I of Aragon under the branches of the tree.
This historical and monumental tree, one of the most important in the Region of Murcia and Spain, is respected and admired by the entire society.
