The origin of the town goes back to a settlement near Castillo de las Paleras, an important Arab castle and village North of modern Pliego. However, locals believe that their municipality has two main historical pillars: the Moorish domination and the settling of the Military Order of Santiago. The town has a number of monuments of cultural interest: the 12th-century castles Castillo de las Paleras (abovementioned) and Castillo de Pliego, as well as the lovely hamlets of Casa Mudéjar, Casa de la Tercia and Casa Grande.
Pliego is also a place where nature lovers can walk peacefully through its forests, go trekking, practice mountain sports and even explore some of its hidden caves.
