Las Torres de Cotillas

Remains of this municipality at the very heart of the Murcian orchard, in Murcia's metropolitan area, have been found dating back to the Roman days, in the 2nd century. The town was known as Gottia, Cotilla and Cotelas during the Visigoth period, and Alwaza Al Kotija under Arab domination. After the Christians reconquered the South of Spain, the town was known as Qutiyyas la Antigua. At one point in history the town was moved to the Las Torres de Fuentes spot (meaning "towers of the fountains") due to the many plagues affecting the Segura river areas. Hence its name: Las Torres de Cotillas (meaning "the towers of Cotillas", the old Visigoth name). In addition to the Roman remains in the Las Lomas area, the main monuments in the town are the 17^th-century church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Salceda, and Palacete D'Estoup mansion.
