The
Sociedades Económicas de amigos del País (Economic Society of Friends of the Country) was a group of associations created in the second half of the 18
th century in Spain. Founded during the reign of King Carlos III, who put them under royal protection with the idea of developing a
Bourbon reform tool, the aim was to disseminate the new ideas and technical and scientific knowledge of the Enlightenment.
In Cartagena, the Society's building of eclectic style and sculptural decoration was erected in the street Aire in the year 1876 by Carlos Mancha. The main facade is structured in five axis and three bodies, with an outstanding veranda in the first floor that has three pointy arches topped with lintels including the busts of Mercury, Minerva and Hercules.
