Parish Church of San Juan Bautista

Plaza Cristo del Rescate
30003 - Murcia -

Spanish name: Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista The church can be officially considered Murcia's first parish, existing since at least 1248, when Fernando III donated it to the Order of Santiago. The church was named San Juan del Real until the end of the eighteenth century, at which point the Count of Floridablanca, who owned a residence by the square, had its name changed to San Juan Bautista out personal devotion to that saint. Inside, there is a notable canopied shrine in red marble, which houses a statue of St. John the Baptist, the work of the sculptor Antonio Dupart. The church also holds pictures by Salzillo, Porcel and Sánchez Lozano.

The Church is the name home of the Brotherhood of Esclavos de Nuestro Padre Jesús del Rescate y María Santísima de la Esperanza, which parades at Easter on Holy Tuesday, in the evening.
