A National Monument since 3 June 1931, its construction began 1447 in the gothic style, which is still evident in the central nave and the eight side chapels. The main portico was built in 1575 under the guidance of architect Julián de Alamíquez. Built in 1583. the altarpiece was the work of brothers Francisco and Diego de Ayala and was dedicated to Saint James the Apostle.
In 1747 work began on the new, baroque style sacristy, one of the finest examples of the mid-18th century rococo style.
The North Door is the work of architect Lorenzo Alonso and is neo-classical in style with two large ionic columns. Work started in 1793 and was completed in 1804.
