Abarán

Parque de la Ermita The town of Abarán is in the Ricote valley, surrounded by rugged, hilly lands traveled by the flowing waters of the Segura river. The first traces of human activity in this area date back to the Bronze Age, although it was not until the times of Muslim domination in the 9th century when the term Favaran, origin of the name Abarán, was first coined. The prosperity of the people of Abarán has always been linked to agriculture and the industries deriving from it, mostly fruit processing for exports.

The narrow, steep streets of Abarán create the taste of this town, carved on fertile sierra lands which to this day remain irrigated by three of the seven waterwheels still in use in the Region of Murcia. In fact, Noria Grande is the largest operating waterwheel in Europe. Paseo de la Ermita is a can't-miss attraction offering visitors the possibility of amazing views overlooking the valley and the Sierra de la Pila while going for a stroll to a little chapel. Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Oro, a lovely little sanctuary, Ermita de los Santos Médicos, chapel home to the patron saints of this town, and Mirador de Las Ventanas, with excellent views of the neighboring town of Cieza, the Segura river, the waterwheels and Sierra de Ricote, will certainly capture your senses.
